They needed to goad the MAGA nutcases to want to go out and kill liberals. So kill one of their heroes and tell them a liberal did it despite ALL evidence to the contrary. MAGA will believe whatever 'evidence against liberals is constructed. Kirk was pushing to release the Epstein files so it also sent the message to zip their lips on Epstein.
