He was pressed to death because he would not plead. They could not "try" him if he would not plead, and therefore they could not confiscate his possessions. He did that so that his family would be abe to keep everything and would not starve. I would call that a hero's death. Think what you like about the witch hunters, but they did have enough respect for the law to make that work. Today's witch hunters are far worse.
