If this was taken before the shooting, he must already have the gun in place. That sounds pretty risky. On the other hand, if it was after the shooting wouldn't he have a rifle to abandon in the woods while he fled?

It could have been a collapsible rifle fitting into the stock. The 'found' weapon might be a plant by someone else.
