Over the past two weeks I have gotten notices of numerous planes returning to their departure point or the nearest available airport.

Refused landing at O'Hara, refused landing at Nuuk in Greenland, multiple disruptive passengers, smoke in the cabin, unspecified "operational" issues. Some in the US, some in Europe, some in Asia.

At least one was halfway across the Atlantic and another was headed to Japan and instead went to Hawaii.

Maybe this is normal and I have just become more aware of how dicey air travel has always been.
