8. As the man said, "we have fucking batteries", and not only that...

...our "fucking batteries" keep getting better and better. And we're not only talking about the high-technology batteries found in hybrid cars or solar installations, but also the boring old batteries you buy at the local hardware store. Even the lowly 9V battery has come a long way since I was a wee one. And I ought to know, because part of my job involves the design of portable circuitry powered by boring old batteries like the 9V (which is actually a compound battery comprised of multiple cells, but I digress). A recent project I worked on would not have been commercially viable with the 9V batteries from 20-30 years ago.

The next 20 years of power storage will be mind-blowing. They need to be; otherwise we're going to burn down the planet with fossil-fuel-induced climate change.
