In reply to the discussion: Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy says 'no doubt' Biden suffered cognitive decline while in office [View all]andym
(6,022 posts)especially after a good State of the Union address. Decline in older folks often is not linear and varies on even a daily basis. Joe thought he could go another 4 years, but he misread his own decline which happens frequently, and he misread the political tea leaves that people wanted change (especially economic)-- the change message typically wins when there is any kind of economic problem, and inflation was clearly affecting people daily. Trump represents chaotic change, but too many voters dismissed the chaos part, because they felt his first term damage did not harm them sufficiently economically. They are now learning a lesson. They would have fared better under Joe even given his current state, because change was actually not needed-- as Bill Clinton stated last year, whoever was the next President would benefit from the recovering economy, even if they did nothing.
Senator Murphy is just stating the reality--he's not doing it to hurt Joe, but to admit he was wrong last February when he stood up for Biden's mental capacity-- he is basically admitting his own misjudgment. He seemed as surprised as everyone by Biden's debate demeanor.
