(1,396 posts)Prostate cancer is about the easiest form of cancer to detect, other than skin cancer. Surely he was receiving regular screenings.
But with a Gleason score of 9, if he was having an annual PSA test (and digital exam), I guess a very aggressive variant could have been undetectable a year ago, but have progressed to the metastatic phase by now.
Prostate cancer is nearly 100% treatable if not metastatic, in the worst case, by prostatectomy. But that is not an option in Biden's case. Or I should say, prostatectomy alone does little good if the cells have already spread. In my case I had a Gleason of 8, but apparently no spread outside the prostate. After prostatectomy, they monitor PSA actively for 10 years because it is entirely possible following a "successful" prostatectomy to have prostate cancer develop several years later.
