Just announced on CNN that he was diagnosed on Friday with an "aggressive" form of prostate cancer which has permeated his bones also.
Obviously, much more to come...

(2,308 posts)Prostate cancer is about the easiest form of cancer to detect, other than skin cancer. Surely he was receiving regular screenings.
But with a Gleason score of 9, if he was having an annual PSA test (and digital exam), I guess a very aggressive variant could have been undetectable a year ago, but have progressed to the metastatic phase by now.
Prostate cancer is nearly 100% treatable if not metastatic, in the worst case, by prostatectomy. But that is not an option in Biden's case. Or I should say, prostatectomy alone does little good if the cells have already spread. In my case I had a Gleason of 8, but apparently no spread outside the prostate. After prostatectomy, they monitor PSA actively for 10 years because it is entirely possible following a "successful" prostatectomy to have prostate cancer develop several years later.

He was wheels up Monday @ 3 am in D.C. flew straight through to Germany for fuel and
then onto Warsaw from there he took a train to Kyiv btw as they train started rolling we
called the Russians and told them dont even think about anything . got in sometime in the
am . And showed up @ Zelenskyys Home @ 8 AM sharp and he was looking sharp too.
And after Ukraine Joe met with the leadership guys from multiple European Countries and put
together a multilateral partnership that was so good that after Trump cheated his way back in
and they all knew he was Russian Dirty that partnership came together and wrote Trump and
America out of European Affairs and moved on without Trump. Joes fingerprints are all over the
new European power structure that is doing the right things as per Ukraine and standing up to
that blood thirsty dictator Vlad Putin.

I love Joe & Dr. Jill.
I'm so glad Joe worked with our allies to write the slob out of their future plans!

I just had to tell this news to my husband who is still struggling with the effects of his prostate cancer treatment. He is distressed.
Lost a dear friend who also had metastatic bone when his was discovered. He had lots of treatment. He died not long after his 50th birthday.
Cancer is overwhelming. The effects of the treatment are always there. The fear of a reoccurrence, is in the background every day and I am a 13 year breast cancer survivor. But it is there.

I just hope he lives for a few more years. If he were to die while Schlump is in office, I would worry that the Orange Hellbeast would try to keep him from getting the kind of state funeral he deserves for his contributions to this nation, not just as potus, but as veep and for all those years in this Senate. If any former president deserves for his passing to be marked with all the formalities and signs of respect possible, it's Joe Biden.

Good God, the cancer has metastasized to the bones. So painful and sadly lethal.
Will the media now hang their heads in shame? Probably not.
Will Agent Orange and his Flying Monkey Brigade get off the Biden smear campaign? Most definitely not because they enjoy kicking people when they're down.
How devastating for the Biden family. The man is well loved with good reason.
I have great empathy for Jill Biden and Hunter, as well as the extended family. They're a tight-knit, loving family and they adore their Pop.
This is going to hurt.

(27 posts)my father had the same diagnosis. When it spread to dad's bones, the doctor said all he could do was keep him out of pain, but there was no cure. That was thirty years ago. Hopefully medical science has progressed enough over three decades to cure the cancer.

I regard anything that MAGA says as empty words.
The current administration is cutting cancer research.
And deporting children undergoing cancer treatment shows their true character.
I also regard Trump's words as meaningless.
I am a lymphoma survivor.
It returned in 2019.
4 different treatments over 2 years failed to produce a complete remission.
5th treatment did produce a complete remission.
Thanks, in part due to ACA (Obamacare) disallowing lifetime limits.
A law Trump tried to destroy.

No doubt, it has taken a toll over the years. His life has not been easy. When he lost his son, Beau, it was almost too much to bear for him.
Yet, he endured and went on to a successful presidency.
But, it was still not enough to defeat the wave of fascism that came with Donald Trump. We received a 4-year reprieve with Joe Biden and almost everyone on DU, including myself, were appreciative and encouraged him to stay in the race. We did not want to use his age against him.
But, it was more than that. Nobody in the Democratic Party establishment wanted to challenge him. They thought he could win again and if he then had to step down, we had an experienced and capable leader in Kamala Harris. No doubt there were debates inside the White House that we did not know about. And more than likely, supporters like us here on DU, may have helped persuade him to stay in the race? We do not know.
However, no one should be pointing fingers. We were facing a crisis with the MAGA fascist movement and we needed whatever leadership we could get at the time.
It is sad to hear about Joe's condition and we wish the very best for him and his family. If there is someone to blame for him staying on, it is all of us. But we should not regret our support. It was a necessity.
Sometimes we play the cards that are dealt and they are just not good enough to win the hand.

(43,849 posts)Joe strikes me as a man whose service held him up through a life of pain. I know were all fragile and mortal but the pile-on at this moment would be damn near unbearable for many. I hope he knows hes loved deeply and has given everything for us, and isnt just being thought of as flawed and failing.
We need to let him know that.
BigmanPigman
(54,579 posts)No prayers from me since that would be hypocritical of me but I do believe in the afterlife (I've had many unusual "experiences" in my life after loved ones have died). If there really is a "life review" than I know Joe will be having a wonderful reunion with his family and friends. He will have gone "home" in peace, like Carter. You can't say that about Kissinger!!! I wish evil monsters like him would get fucked big time. Those like him should get KARMA in spades. However, this is not what happens and it pisses me off!
There is no "karma". Evil monsters succeed and live forever. That is a fact of the human race. This is why I am a misanthrope. People, especially those who have testosterone poisoning (49%of the human race), thrive on killing and harming others. Humans are genocidal sadists. Always have been and always will be. Kissinger was a sadist, Biden and Carter are humanitarians. It is very black and white. Evil vs Love. Evil always wins in the end.

(25,903 posts)I hope he can beat it. My dad fought his agressive prostate cancer for 13 years - but then he was amazing. He kept walking up until the end when the doctors had told him 6 months previous that it would be impossible for him to walk with his leg and hip bones absolutely eaten up with black lesions. He beat the odds for so long before he just couldn't do it anymore.
I hope the Bidens have time together.
I hate the fucking right wing liars for piling on to him so badly, it is freaking ridiculous when an actual pustule of ire and revenge and dementiaa, who is nothing more than a fugly criminal and traitor to our country, is supported by them.
