No doubt, it has taken a toll over the years. His life has not been easy. When he lost his son, Beau, it was almost too much to bear for him.
Yet, he endured and went on to a successful presidency.
But, it was still not enough to defeat the wave of fascism that came with Donald Trump. We received a 4-year reprieve with Joe Biden and almost everyone on DU, including myself, were appreciative and encouraged him to stay in the race. We did not want to use his age against him.
But, it was more than that. Nobody in the Democratic Party establishment wanted to challenge him. They thought he could win again and if he then had to step down, we had an experienced and capable leader in Kamala Harris. No doubt there were debates inside the White House that we did not know about. And more than likely, supporters like us here on DU, may have helped persuade him to stay in the race? We do not know.
However, no one should be pointing fingers. We were facing a crisis with the MAGA fascist movement and we needed whatever leadership we could get at the time.
It is sad to hear about Joe's condition and we wish the very best for him and his family. If there is someone to blame for him staying on, it is all of us. But we should not regret our support. It was a necessity.
Sometimes we play the cards that are dealt and they are just not good enough to win the hand.
