Until I was 29 and saved enough to move to Dallas I lived in terror that my employers would find out that I was gay. I lost two jobs that I really needed when they found out that I was gay. And once I had my nursing license I could have been reported to boards for moral turpitude and lost my license, that's what my boss' boss told me. In Dallas I got a job at a hospital where they didn’t care if you were gay. It still wasn't good to let others know (to flaunt it), but they wouldn't just fire you immediately
as soon as they found out that you were gay.

Kids (people under 40) today have absolutely no idea what it is to live in a society ruled by religious conservatives. And it will be a thousand times more invasive with the internet. No worrying that someone who hates you will go through your mailbox to find a magazine in a plain brown wrapper to blackmail you with, now they just report you to the police who seize your computer.
