Partly out of his desperate need for attention and love of smarm and partly from the astounding gaps in his people-reading skills, and also the hopeful thought that even some of the candidates he focused on, despite their overall depravity, had sufficient glimmer of self-respect and discipline to decline his interest. There must be a few.
