diabetes. I will warn you, though, that if your fasting sugar is right around 100, 101, you may have prediabetes.

I was fine, doing just what you are doing -- the walking, eating well, but I was also about 25-30 lbs. overweight. When I turned 60, I was diagnosed with diabetes. The year before, my fasting blood sugar had been 100. I read recently that studies show that people who have a series of fasting blood sugars around 100 are more likely to actually develop diabetes. I guess my BG has been creeping up for years, from very normal to almost diabetic, to diabetic. Sigh. Exercise obviously didn't help me. It does look like everyone has a different threshold; some will develop it with slight overweight, others have to put on lots of pounds to get it, and then there are those who have genetic components and weight means nothing.
