35. Olympia man sentenced to 6 years for setting wife afire

OLYMPIA — A man who poured lighter fluid on his wife’s legs and set her on fire was sentenced Tuesday in Olympia to more than six years in prison.

It was the second sentencing for Duane M. Rader who had a previous 10-year sentence for arson and assault overturned on appeal.

The Olympian reports Rader pleaded guilty to the same charges. His wife suffered second-degree burns in the assault three years ago at their Thurston County home.

Rader has been at the Airway Heights Corrections Center since his 2011 trial. His lawyer, Patrick O’Connor, says the 15-year Army veteran who had three overseas tours used alcohol to self-medicate post-traumatic stress disorder.

Ex-boyfriend charged in January strangling of Kirkland woman

The ex-boyfriend of a 28-year-old Kirkland mother who was found strangled in January was charged today with second-degree murder.

Before the body of Amy Rene Hargrove was found Jan. 6 in her mother’s Kirkland home, she had taken out a protection order pointing police to her ex-boyfriend in the event anything happened to her. “A piece of paper isn’t going to save my life when he finally gets me,” she wrote in the court document, “but at least you will know who killed me.”

The former boyfriend, Burrell M. Cushman, 28, was interviewed by detectives immediately after Hargrove’s slaying. Kirkland police said Cushman was considered a person of interest, but the investigation continued for months.

Kirkland police had previously said investigators were frustrated with the length of time it took to make an arrest, but that certain elements of their probe could not be rushed.

Police spokesman Mike Murray said detectives had to eliminate other potential suspects as well as wait for the results of crime lab tests before they could submit the completed investigation to King County prosecutors.

Burien man accused of killing ex-wife, leaving body in car at park and ride


A judge found probable cause on Tuesday to hold a 41-year-old Burien man on investigation of second-degree murder after he told Seattle police late Sunday that he though his ex-wife was dead and that her body was in a vehicle at a Kent Park and Ride.

The man waived his first court appearance Tuesday and a bond hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, according to a spokesman for King County prosecutors. The man has not been charged.

Also Tuesday, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 39-year-old Ruth Castillo-Yanez. She died from multiple stab wounds and her death was ruled a homicide, according to death investigators.

Around 10:20 p.m. Sunday, police contacted a man in the 4700 block of 50th Avenue South in Seattle’s Seward Park neighborhood, according to the probable-cause statement outlining the case against him. His clothes were bloody and his shirt was inside-out, the statement says.
