Why do people hate scientists? [View all]

She missed religion as one problem. Religious people want answers set into stone and passed down through the ages that will never change until the end of time. Scientists focus on questions, and scientific fact is always being reviewed and revisited, religious people feel like they're standing on quicksand when they read anything about science.

Otherwise, it's a combination, different aspects in different cultures.

Add to that the modern retelling of the Icarus story, the trope of the mad scientist who goes too far, too fast because he arrogantly believes he knows best and manages to create terrible problems that everybody else needs to try to clean up. While we had the Mad Barber of Fleet Street, that was fairly harmless in terms of death toll. The mad scientist causes eathquakes and erupting volcanoes and giant ants and engineered superbugs that infect millions. He's a lot scarier.
