I recall back in about 1978 when a friend lent me her Mazda that was a 6 speed and I was very nervous driving it, even though I was already driving a Beetle with 4 speeds. Maybe the Mazda was 5 speed. That was a very long time ago and I've forgotten the details.
But yes, I'll be interested in learning how useful that 7th gear is.

They vary, but a "5 over 4" is basically a 20 speed transmission. Watch this vid;
