2. Col. Ellsworth's Regiment, the 11th New York Infantry, the 'Fire Zoauves' was quartered in the Capitol

building in Washington, D.C. in spring 1861. The regiment was made up of former New York firemen.

On May 9, 1861 the Zoauves assisted in putting out a fire at the Willard Hotel on Penn. Ave. in Washington. The Marshall House incident in Alexandria, VA took place on May 24.
