building in Washington, D.C. in spring 1861. The regiment was made up of former New York firemen.

On May 9, 1861 the Zoauves assisted in putting out a fire at the Willard Hotel on Penn. Ave. in Washington. The Marshall House incident in Alexandria, VA took place on May 24.

Wiki... Drawn from the ranks of the city's many volunteer fire companies, the unit was known alternately as the Ellsworth Zouaves, First Fire Zouaves, First Regiment New York Zouaves, and U.S. National Guards.
