1. Steinbeck included his take on this in his book Travels with Charley in Search of America

He took a little detour from his planned travel route to observe just what it was like when a mob of people tried to turn on a little girl who just wanted to go to school.

I was pretty young in 1960 so couldn't really grasp what all was going on. I recall asking grown ups why all those people were being so mean to a little girl. As an old woman, reading Steinbeck's book about being out and about in America that year, it was a damned shocking glimpse into the ugliness that, sadly, still exists in this country.
