11. Gabapentin is for the pain

There are very few medications you can give a cat for pain. Stuff that humans and even dogs can handle will destroy a cat's little liver or kidneys. Aspirin, Advil, Tylenol, etc., will kill a cat.

There is an NSAID (Onsior) they will prescribe for three days only. Buprinex (an opioid) works very well but vets are very reluctant to prescribe it because the DEA record keeping is oppressive. I couldn't get it for my cat last September when he was dying of cancer. There's a couple of other choices but these are the main ones.

Gabapentin is not a great pain med, despite what my pain management doctor says. It works better for nerve pain. I take it myself for herniated cervical disks. it is also prescribed to relieve anxiety for cats going to the vet, but I never use it because I just found that it made them loopy and anxious at the same time.
