7. Way back in the late 1980s, one of our cats managed to out...

...of our house. We didn't know it until a next door neighbor came over to tell us she had been hit by a car and had died. I was devastated. We never did figure out how she got out.

She was only 3 years old. She'd shown up in our yard a couple of years before, in late kitten stage, and adjusted to indoor life with our other 3 cats without a hitch. Never showed any interest in going back outside.

To this day, if I can't find one of our cats for more than about 10 seconds, I immediately fear that someone has managed to get out somehow, and I have an instant knot in my stomach. All 4 cats wear beeper devices on their collars so I can "beep" them if I can't see them. Great peace of mind.

And cats are so damn good at hiding.
