we taught our English Setter not to beg by promising him the last bite of whatever we were eating... and then making sure he got the last bite. He kept a sly on everyone throughout the meal, of course... but wouldn't come to us with the sad eyes until we were getting close to that last bite!

I'm working on my current dog... a true mutt the size of a pony... to do the same thing. But he's not as smart as my other dogs; he constantly stares right now and all Mama will say is "Wait until the last bite!" (LOL)
