Archaeologists have long been able to trace things through skeletons. Depriving the poor of country ale also deprived them of a great deal of nutrition as well as B vitamins from the yeast, but that's for another rant. Tea with sugar democratized tooth decay, and we're still seeing the effects now as sugary drinks proliferate.
