In regards absorption issues, for around a year I've been taking a mix of soil based probiotics by Prescript Assist. I like it, but some find it too overpowering, while others swear by it.

Not cheap, but it might be worth contacting the manufacturer for a sample. I'd read the reviews at places like Amazon. A few people seem to have had strong reactions.
