that many auto-immune diseases hit us after a viral infection. Type I diabetes is almost universally acknowledged to be one of those. And most of them hit us when our immune system is low for one reason or another. There was a very good article in a recent issue of Scientific American, either August or September. Very readable. I'm sorry I don't have the link but it shouldn't be hard to find.
