I finally had to get the cat off the table before she sat down on my keyboard. Apparently I wasn't completely successful.

... amount of 1-2%. I was interested in these high strength/weight alloys for metal telescope mirrors, where they could potentially be thinner and lighter than the traditional glass mirrors. You might have mentioned other alloys such as carbides which sent me off to the literature where I encountered Ti4Al11Si (very close crystal structure to TiAl3). I do know that my first interest in Ti-Al alloys was actually triggered by a hard-SF novel.

Looking forward to hearing more about recoverable rare elements. Waste not, want not.


ETA: Apparently it wasn't the cat ! I had typed a tilde before 1% and everything after that was deleted by DU ! It happened twice, and when I tried to type in a tilde just now nothing resulted. Maybe it's my keyboard, not DU. Have to get to the bottom of that later.
