1. We never made a serious effort to avert global warming

Whoever holds political office when any particular disaster happens is going to be blamed for it, despite the fact that after decades of inaction we are beginning to face natural disasters we cannot fight, at costs that are prohibitive. You can see it happening in Los Angeles, where it's the mayor's fault for being out of the country, or that Gavin Newsome's because he made an appearance on a beach instead of against the backdrop of a burning house, or because the water pressure was low in the Pacific Palisades, or that firefighters ran out of water after hitting the three million gallon mark.

I say this as someone who lives in a town that will be burnt off the map any year now.
