3. If it's visible in the device list, I'd try dd first...you already have it.

Unfortunately I'm short on time so I can't really explain how to use it (it's not an "app" per se, but rather a Unix utility - a string of commands you type into Terminal), but this is a good primer. It works at a lower level than any OS X software and can do things no other utility can. Good luck!
