Oconto tavern owner posts racial slur on Facebook amid Sunday football; post widely shared [View all]

OCONTO - Seven years after arson nearly destroyed his business, Jeff Turecek finds himself in a firestorm of his own making.

His use of a racial slur in a Facebook post as NFL football games started Sunday has drawn significant criticism on social media from around the state and spurred discussion about racism in a virtually all-white community.

Turecek — who subsequently apologized in a post before deleting his Facebook profile — said in a text message to the Oconto County Reporter that “I messed up.”

said a word that should never have been said,” he wrote. “I apologized. But I know that doesn’t help.”

The slur appeared in the second of two posts. Turecek started off saying “Well I (sic) super excited for football. Let’s see if I can watch anymore or if they ruin it for me.”
