Oconto tavern owner posts racial slur on Facebook amid Sunday football; post widely shared [View all]
OCONTO - Seven years after arson nearly destroyed his business, Jeff Turecek finds himself in a firestorm of his own making.
His use of a racial slur in a Facebook post as NFL football games started Sunday has drawn significant criticism on social media from around the state and spurred discussion about racism in a virtually all-white community.
Turecek who subsequently apologized in a post before deleting his Facebook profile said in a text message to the Oconto County Reporter that I messed up.
said a word that should never have been said, he wrote. I apologized. But I know that doesnt help.
The slur appeared in the second of two posts. Turecek started off saying Well I (sic) super excited for football. Lets see if I can watch anymore or if they ruin it for me.
