Harrell draws 'line in the sand' on funding for regional homelessness authority [View all]
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell says it's time for other local jurisdictions to contribute more to addressing homelessness, including land for shelters.
Harrell, a member of the King County Regional Homelessness Authority board, is requesting a funding and services analysis from the authority, saying its response will be "critical to understand KCRHA's future resource expectations from all participating entities."
He also is proposing a resolution that the authority work with member jurisdictions "to develop an inventory of all appropriate municipally owned property that could host temporary shelters and encampments." He added he would be willing to fund shelters in other jurisdictions if they provide the sites.
Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus, a KCRHA board member, is pushing back against the suggestion the city isn't pulling its weight. She said Auburn spends about $4.7 million annually aimed at reducing or preventing homelessness.
