Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Friday at age 87, visited Virginia Military Institute in 2017 for a public appearance at Cameron Hall that Roanoke Times reporter Laurence Hammack covered with photojournalist Stephanie Klein-Davis.

Ginsburg wrote the majority opinion in a groundbreaking 1996 decision that found that state-supported Virginia Military Instiute's male-only admissions policy was unconstitutional. The decision in United States v. Virginia found that the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause included equality of the sexes.
