In the televised 1991 hearings, Hatch said that the opposition against Clarence Thomas was being led by "smart lawyers" who were manipulating the history of Thomas's career and personal life. Hatch used that term, "smart lawyers," at least three times in the space of less than a minute in an attempt to persuade viewers that Thomas was being victimized by unscrupulous attorneys working on behalf of the Democrats.
