HIGH POINT — A bill introduced last week by a legislator with Piedmont Triad ties would allow earlier sales of alcoholic beverages in restaurants on Sundays.
Sen. Rick Gunn, R-Alamance, whose district covers parts of Randolph County, filed Senate Bill 155 to allow sales at restaurants starting at 10 a.m. on Sundays instead of noon. The bill wouldn’t change another Sunday alcoholic beverage sale limitation — grocery stores still wouldn’t be able to sell beer or wine before noon on Sundays.
Senate Bill 155 would allow earlier Sunday sales of alcohol only with local approval. A county board of commissioners or city council would have to authorize the change before restaurants could start earlier Sunday alcohol sales in their jurisdiction.
Gunn said his main goal is to promote business growth and opportunity.
“We have a booming travel and tourism industry. It is one of the biggest money-makers for our state,” he said. “This is something that will help them immensely as they are trying to serve the needs of people traveling our state.”
