Newark Airport flight cancellations continue amid air traffic controller shortage [View all]

Who could possibly imagine that laying off 400 air traffic control employees in February would lead to this?

Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed at Newark Liberty International Airport over the weekend and again on Monday as shortages of air traffic controllers persists, causing flight disruptions at one of the nation’s busiest airports.

As of 7 a.m. Monday, 73 flights had been canceled and 22 more delayed out of Newark Liberty. On Sunday, there were 141 cancellations and 436 delays, according to FlightAware.com.

United Airlines announced on Friday the elimination of nearly three dozen round-trip flights from its daily schedule in and out of Newark Airport due to continuing air traffic control staffing issue.

The airline also cited the technological problems that snarled airport operations last week, which included a telecommunications outage.
