Of course, when I was growing up on Long Island, I thought of New Jersey as some kind of hellhole, an opinion I continued to hold when I lived in California, until I moved here.

My girlfriend who is from LI told me just the opposite. She said that her family thought of NJ as "having arrived" and they were very happy when they could afford to move to Northern NJ.
