State lawmaker (D) facing charges for allegedly attempting to influence election [View all]

BLUE HILL, Maine — Rep. Nina Milliken, D-Blue Hill, is facing illegal electioneering charges.

Illegal electioneering is when a candidate for office attempts to influence voters too close to the polling location.

In Maine, this is defined by displaying campaign materials within 250 feet of a voting place on Election Day or during absentee voting. This is a Class E crime, which is a misdemeanor and carries a penalty of up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

While this crime allegedly happened in Hancock County, it is being overseen by Knox and Lincoln County District Attorney Natasha Irving. Irving said this is because it is a conflict of interest for the district attorney in Milliken's home county.
