While some of the slave owners used it, other used to brand other marks onto runaway slaves. It's why we fought the Civil War and did away with slavery. It's why we find the flag of those who wanted to preserve slavery with all its abuses a traitor's flag.

I think you'll find most people in the country opposed to branding runaway slaves. It's just odd that they have such affection for a flag representing support for it.
