New Orleans elects new mayor (D) to lead city out of chaos [View all]

Louisiana's signature city will have a new mayor after New Orleans elected Helena Moreno on Oct. 11 to lead a Crescent City whose residents are desperate to emerge from the chaos produced under the direction of indicted incumbent LaToya Cantrell.

WWL-TV is the first to project Moreno's victory.

“All across our city it’s clear voters want change and a 24-7 leader who will put the people of New Orleans first," Moreno, a Democrat, said in a previous statement to USA Today Network.

Moreno, 48, the City Council vice president who was the front-runner from the start, was able to avoid a runoff by besting a crowded primary of candidates.
