16. Low social and emotional intelligence.

Although born, raised, and still living in Iowa, it's hard to "go home." Of the 42 in my class, most never left. But I did.

Graduate college, time abroad, travel throughout the US, and diverse social interactions have transformed me in such ways that I'm an alien in my own home town. I feel something of what POC or other minorities must feel when they pass through that place.

The primitive attitudes of people there, their inability to distinguish fact or reason from hyperbole or fiction, and their dogmatic, narrow-minded pragmatism and anti-intellectual disposition can be endured only in small doses.

But then, I'm just a latte-drinking liberal elitist.
