1. GET REGISTERED

Get registered to vote with your current name, at your current address, by 28 days before Election Day. For the November 6th, 2012 general election, you must register no later than October 9th, 2012. You can also register in person during “grace period” registration, which begins on October 10th and ending on October 30th. You can get your registration started right now.

2. WHAT TO BRING

If you are voting in federal election in Illinois for the first time, make sure you bring one of the following pieces of identification, with your current name and current address, to the polls:
• A current and valid photo identification
• Utility bill
• Bank statement
• Government check
• Paycheck
• Lease or contract for residence
• Student ID & mail addressed to voter’s residence
• Government document
If you’ve voted in a federal election in Illinois before, you aren’t required to bring ID in order to check and obtain a ballot.

3. VOTE!

Election Day is Tuesday November 6, 2012. Polls in Illinois will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central Time.

Vote Early

Early voting in Illinois starts twenty-two days before an election and extends through the fifth day before Election Day. For the November 6th, 2012 general election, it starts on October 15th and ends on November 1st.

Vote by Mail

Any registered voter can absentee vote in Illinois, and no excuse is required. You can request an absentee ballot for the November 2012 general election beginning on September 27th, 2012. If you mail in your request for an absentee ballot, the application must be received by the election authority by November 1st (but we recommend giving yourself at least a month prior to the Election). All completed ballots must be postmarked by November 5th. You can also request and vote an absentee ballot in person by November 5th, 2012.
