to host the contests and the individuals who volunteer to take on the task are most appreciated, especially by those of us who have been hosting contests for some time.
But the contests provide an opportunity for DU photographers to share their work and each time it is a thrill for the winners to see their work appreciated and recognized. Although the voting isn't blind, most people aren't aware of which photographer submitted which photo (unless they track back into the Submissions thread in the Photography Forum) and announcing the winners in GD provides an acknowledgement of the photographers whose work earned the winning votes.
I know, as someone who has hosted many contests-- and won a few--that I don't mind the effort involved in putting together a winner's thread, and appreciate seeing a photo of mine which has won acknowledged as my work.
