I didn't know Sonny Rollins recorded with the Rolling Stones. [View all]

Now I'm a rocker so I don't know jazz from Ska, but when I found out Saxophone great Sonny Rollins played the mournful solo on "Waiting For A Friend" from Tattoo You, I was saddened by the loss today. I've always loved Rollins' sax but didn't know it.

While assembling older unreleased songs for "Tattoo You" Mick asked Rollins if he'd like to help on a couple cuts. Even Mick was surprised when he accepted.

When they dubbed Sonny's soulful melody in he asked Jagger to stay in the studio and dance out what he wanted him to play on the track while Rollins interpreted his body language into that ice smooth solo.

Sonny never toured with them, but I didn't want to post the album version. Instead this is a live video from that 1981 tour featuring the great Ernie Watts on sax. It has to be among the most beautiful passages ever.
