When I was a teenager, back in the late 60s, we'd let our cat outside for the night. My dad added two bedrooms and a bath to our one-story ranch house so our small patio was between my bedroom and the house. My bedroom had a door to the patio. When our cat wanted back in, usually after midnight, instead of meowing to be let in, he'd push his head against the wooden patio screen door causing it to bang. The banging would wake me up and I'd let him back in. He definitely did a good job of training me to let him in.
