34. Diane Chambers was someone trying to be someone they're not

Diane Chambers was middle-class and, although graduating from college, was a pretentious intellectual. She reminds me of Hyacinth Bucket from the British TV program Keeping Up Appearances. Hyacinth was born into a working class family, married a man who was middle class, and thought of herself as being upper middle class. She pronounced her married last name as "Bouquet" because "Bucket was too common.

Diane Chambers is the same as Hyacinth Bucket in that she she pretends and believes she's someone above everyone else..

What make for good comedy in both characters is when they get knocked down when they try to show their superiority over others.
