Quisling was appointed the titular head of government by Hitler, and thereafter he assisted the Nazis in purging the country of Jews and oppressing (in particular) teachers, journalists and the clergy, many of whom were imprisoned but who formed the backbone of the very effective resistance movement. Quisling told Norwegians that they would have the new regime forced upon them "whether they like it or not." Sound familiar?
