The worst single year for U.S. inflation was 1917, with a year-over-year peak of 17.8%, driven by World War I spending. However, the most painful and prolonged period of high inflation was the "Great Inflation" from 19731982, marked by high inflation rates and a series of oil shocks. Another significant period of high inflation occurred in the years immediately following World War I, culminating in a peak of 23.7% in June 1920. *
