The White House has responded after a federal judge dismissed the criminal cases against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James without prejudice on Monday.
U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie found that Lindsey Halligan had been appointed as interim U.S. Attorney just two days before Comey's case with no prior prosecutorial experience. Her disqualification renders her actions, including the signing of the indictments, legally invalid.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Monday afternoon that the DOJ will appeal the dismissal of the indictments, stating, "Lindsey Halligan was legally appointed ... the Department of Justice will be appealing very soon. It is our position that Lindsey Halligan is extremely qualified for this position, but more importantly, was legally appointed to it."
Why It Matters
The rulings by U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie pause, for now, two prosecutions aimed at two of the presidents most prominent political adversaries and deliver a sharp rebuke to the Trump administrations effort to install a loyal, inexperienced prosecutor to bring the charges.
