OMAHA President Donald Trump will have a moment in Fridays Alaska summit to show the world he sees Russian President Vladimir Putin for who he is and not how Trump might want him to be, Nebraska Republican U.S. Rep. Don Bacon says.
Putin is the expansionist leader of an American adversary who wants to advance on Europe like one of his idols, Peter the Great, Bacon said, not an ally to American interests.
But to see things clearly, Europe and the world need Trump to respond like he has more recently and be the version of himself who recognizes the nighttime bombings of Ukrainian cities by Putin and not the one who viewed Putin as a friend, Bacon said.
History in national defense
Bacon, a retired Air Force brigadier general who served during the Cold War and leads the House Baltic Caucus, is a longtime hawk on Ukraine, having argued that both Trump and the Biden administration have moved too slowly in arming Ukraines defense against Russian invasion. He oversaw the 55th Wing at Nebraskas Offutt Air Force Base, which is home to U.S. Strategic Command.
