(2,830 posts)Sure, release the hostages. Please, for God's sake!
But until Hamas' "total defeat"? Then it will go on for years, while civilians are slaughtered and starved.
What does total defeat mean? Have you seen any explanation of that - how will success be measured? Does it mean the killing of every member of the military wing? Of the members of government or civil service? Of UNRWA, even?
What about the new recruits that Blinken warned are being recruited at great speed? You see how radicalization works. You kill people's entire families except for one, that one will surely want revenge. Similar to what Israel is doing to Gaza after October 7th.
And so it will go on an on. Palestinians are sure to lose in the end but it won't be a walk in the park for Israelis either, for many, many years. And once Palestinians are erased, there are all those neighbouring Arab nations.... no peace.
If Israel wants peace, it should stop its war-crimes and atrocities against Palestinians first of all. Then, it needs to decide if it wants peace or is willing to face years of war and being a pariah state in the world in order to take what little remains of Palestinians' land OR if it is willing to finally recognize Palestinians' right to their own state, on at least a portion of their historic lands.
I am not optimistic about what Israel will choose.
