I've experienced worse between 1986--1987. There were about 4 earthquakes over 5.5 within months.

That was when I remember seeing trees swaying at 5AM when I ran to my door. After that I kept a pair of shoes and jeans by the door. I 'd only moved to CA in 1984 so this was new to me.

I've felt all sorts of earthquakes...there really is a difference!

In 1986 my mattress was on my floor and when I was asleep and felt it I thought a bugler was under my bed then I realized..uh oh!

One year (2008 or 2009) at 3PM I felt a BOOM! On the roof of my 1st grade classroom. It was an odd quake. No shaking at all, just BOOM! I'm glad my 1st graders had already gone home. I made them practice drills all the time. Go under your desk, put your arm over your head and hold onto the desk leg. My real plan was to run the class out to the center of the playground since there were no trees, overhead wires or buildings could hurt them.

I even give Red Cross disaster backpacks as gifts to my family after I received one from a friend.
