The GOP wasn't founded until 1854 and was quite certainly legitimate in the time of Lincoln. It had nothing to do with the Revolutionary War because it wouldn't exist for another 80 years.

Their ideological shift mostly began in the early 1900s when they began to shift to the right. They went off the rails after the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act in the 1960s, followed by opposing abortion and pandering to the religious right. The current GOP is nothing like that of Lincoln.
