The New York Times reports:
When the State Department secured the release of 10 Americans and permanent legal residents from a Venezuela prison last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio hailed the action as part of an effort to safeguard the well-being of Americans unjustly held abroad. But one of the men released from the prison, an American-Venezuelan dual national named Dahud Hanid Ortiz, had been convicted in Venezuela for the murder of three people in Spain in 2016, according to an official at the prosecutors office in Madrid and Venezuelan court records reviewed by The New York Times.

And the real reasons they turn people away include "visited Cuba":
US rules say travellers who have been in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021 are not eligible for ESTA and must apply for a visa instead.
That became the issue on Nicky Campbells BBC Radio 5 Live show, when an England supporter received his decision on air.
Well, Ive just had a thing come through on my ESTA from the American Embassy and theyve refused my entry to America because I went to Cuba on a cruise, he began by saying.
It says: Unfortunately, you are unable to enter the USA due to your entry into Cuba in 2025 and therefore you are not eligible to enter the USA.
So you get a thing back from ESTA, they give you 72 hours and theyll come back to you. And the longer it takes, normally it takes about 14 minutes. This time its taken three days and theyve refused my entry.
